When a client contacts Legal Aid WA for assistance, it often happens during one of the most challenging moments of their lives. Whether it's escaping family violence, resolving a parenting dispute, protecting their rights as they age, or accessing justice for the first time, clients rely on Legal Aid WA to provide timely, high-quality legal assistance.
The visible face of Legal Aid WA is undoubtedly our frontline staff – lawyers, paralegal staff and information officers, social support workers. Meanwhile there is another team working behind the scenes to make our services possible for these clients in their moment of need. Legal Aid WA's Finance team plays a critical role in ensuring service delivery is sustainable, well-managed and accessible, and that our range of services remain responsive to the needs of clients across Western Australia.
The work of the Finance team extends beyond financial management: they manage procurement and contracts, budgets and management accounting, financial accounting, business intelligence and performance, as well as property, facilities and fleet management. They play a critical enabling role in delivering Legal Aid WA’s strategic priorities by ensuring funding is allocated sustainably, strategically, and accountably, while proactively securing additional funding to support emerging needs and high-priority initiatives.
They are also responsible for maintaining the stable foundations of fit-for-purpose and accessible buildings and client meeting facilities, reliable transport for staff to reach clients in prisons, courts and regional and remote locations, and accurate program reporting and funding accountability. Despite this wide-ranging portfolio, they remain one integrated team, with a high-performance culture based on pillars of unity, respect, transparency and excellence.
An important function of the team is to use data and robust reporting to demonstrate the impact of Legal Aid WA’s services across the state. Evaluating and reporting on our services provides the evidence critical to enabling informed decision-making, supporting continuous improvement of our systems and services, and maintaining legal assistance services for the communities and clients that need it most.
This commitment to evidence-based service delivery was reflected recently when representatives from Legal Aid WA joined colleagues from across Australia at the National Legal Aid Data and Grants Working Group meeting.
The meeting brought together representatives from legal aid commissions nationwide to strengthen national approaches to data, outcomes measurement and grants systems, while also exploring better ways to engage with clients and panel practitioners.
Discussions also included future priorities such as Indigenous Data Sovereignty and the National Access to Justice Partnership (NAJP) Data Strategy and Outcomes Framework.
Taking these opportunities to participate in national collaborations improves the way our services are designed, funded and evaluated, with clients always at the centre. Working alongside our national counterparts allows Legal Aid WA to share knowledge, adopt best practices and contribute to national initiatives that strengthen the legal assistance sector as a whole.
While the legal issues that Western Australians may face change over time, Legal Aid WA's Finance team remains committed to operating systems that are transparent, accountable and informed by evidence. Every action taken by the team – whether it’s creating clear signage for a Legal Aid WA service location, compiling a service report, up-skilling a team member, finalising a funding agreement – supports Legal Aid WA’s mission of providing quality legal services to the people who need them most.
