The latest series of Law Talk WA will launch on Monday 30 June, this time centring on family violence. Family violence is a major health and welfare issue in Australia, with wide-ranging impacts on families in all demographics, cultural groups, geographic locations, and socioeconomic groups, with women and children impacted most of all.
Beneath the Surface: Understanding Family Violence is hosted by Legal Aid WA’s Wibke Timmermann and features specialists with experience in family violence issues from Circle Green Community Legal, Communicare, Consumer Credit Legal Service, Legal Aid WA, Northern Suburbs Community Legal Centre, Ovis, Sussex Street Community Law Services and Women’s Legal Service WA.
Each episode has a specific focus, and includes helpful discussions, practical advice and information on support services available to people experiencing family violence.
30 June - Ep1: Violence, Abuse, Control: Understanding Family Violence
1 July - Ep 2: Safety Planning: Practical Tips for Keeping Safe
2 July - Ep 3: Family Violence in First Nations and Multicultural Communities
3 July - Ep 4: Finding Stability: Strategies for Financial and Housing Issues caused by Family Violence

Discussions across the five episodes include coercive control scenarios, tips on how to stay safe when leaving your home due to family violence, what to do if you’re worried that your mortgage will go unpaid, challenges for multicultural and First Nations communities, behavioural change programs and supports for users of family violence and more.
The series shows the broad range of holistic supports offered by Legal Aid WA, community legal centres, financial counsellors and refuges for people in family violence. We hope the podcast help people access information in a confidential and secure way, know they are not alone - there is support available, and empower them with greater knowledge about some of the things they might choose to do.
This is the fourth series of the collaborative podcast Law Talk WA, which is supported by Community Legal WA and Law Access.
