Between heading out to our regions and making headlines, our Civil Division has been busy.
Dealing with a myriad of legal problems, ranging from elder rights to Royal Commissions, the Civil Division provides assistance to a broad cross-section of the community.
Not only does the team provide in person and telephone appointments for legal information and advice and provide grants of aid for civil matters, they also engage in a large number of support services, many of which include outreach and regional work.
Our Elder Rights WA service offers free legal assistance to older people who’ve experienced elder abuse, or who are at risk of experiencing elder abuse. Recently, the team travelled to Kalgoorlie to meet with other organisations and educate the community about the service and what it can offer.
Elder Rights WA isn’t the only service that has been highlighted recently in the regions. Our Mortgage Hardship Service recently made headlines across regional WA for assisting people in the community facing increased financial pressure from ongoing interest rate rises. The service, which provides free legal advice on mortgage payment arrears, default notices and repossession offers state-wide telephone and virtual consultations, or in-person appointments throughout the Perth metropolitan area through their outreach program.
Our NDIS Appeals and Your Story – Disability Legal Support Service work with people with disabilities and their families, carers, supporters, and advocates.
The NDIS Appeals provides legal advice, assistance, and representation for eligible NDIS Appeals. This may include assistance for individuals who’ve been declined access to the NDIS, or for NDIS participants who disagree with a decision made by the National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA), such as the funded supports in their plan.
Your Story was set up to support people tell their story to the Royal Commission into Violence, Abuse, Neglect and Exploitation of People with Disability. Building on the connections made during the Royal Commission’s lifetime, Your Story continues to provide a holistic service to people with disabilities.
Similarly, our Defence and Veterans Legal Service can assist current and ex-serving members of the ADF, their families, carers and supporters who want to share their experiences with the Royal Commission into Defence and Veterans Suicide. The service can also provide free and independent legal advice and support, as well as connect current and former members of the ADF with other services, such as counselling or advocacy.
