The sudden death of Stephen Thackray has been a great shock and is so very sad. He was an outstanding lawyer, jurist and mediator, a caring mentor and friend. In her tribute Chief Judge Sutherland of the Family Court of WA described him as a “shining example “. He also had a wonderful sense of humour. WA Family Law Practitioners will remember his famous “Apostles Creed” on the drafting of family court affidavits which was a memorable combination of these attributes.
In addition to his exceptional judicial skills, Stephen was a humble and compassionate man who understood that the Family Court was part of a much bigger Family Law system. He developed strong respectful collaborative working relationships with the broader sector, leading developments in innovative practice which have been a yardstick for other jurisdictions. He was committed to ensuring access to justice and was a great supporter of Legal Aid WA and the community sector. Sector.
Legal Aid WA worked with him on a range of initiatives, most recently in the Jiji Nyirti project with the Martu people in Newman that he spoke so passionately about at last year’s LAWA Summer Series.
He has contributed so much and has been taken from us too soon. Our thoughts are with Janet, Amanda, James and Leandri.
