On 4 May 2021, Legal Aid WA live-streamed the launch of our First Nations Strategic Plan, Jalba – Coming Together. It's a bold plan that has been led by Legal Aid WA First Nations Staff Network in its creation and development. The event was broadcast from our head office on Whadjuk Noongar Boodja, with our keynote speaker, Temali Howard, launching the plan from Miriwoong Country in Kununurra.
In WA, one fifth of our clients identify as Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander (Aboriginal) and the number of Aboriginal people seeking our help is increasing every year. Given these figures, it’s important that Legal Aid WA has a plan to address this need. Through our First Nations Strategic Plan we’re committing to improving our services and tailoring them to the needs of our Aboriginal clients, improving cultural safety and accessibility. A future where Legal Aid WA will play a key role in addressing the disproportionate justice outcomes experienced by Aboriginal people and assist with increasing social justice outcomes.
