Training for applicants

If you are applying for membership of certain panels and lists, you must ensure that you complete the required online training, provided through Legal Aid WA, prior to the application period closing. This training attracts CPD points and is offered free of charge to all applicants applying for membership of  a required panel or list.

Applicants for the Independent Children's Lawyer and Child Representative List will also need to complete the current Independent Children's Lawyer National Training Program

A Panel Practitioner's Guide to Legal Aid Western Australia

The Legal Aid WA course, titled A Panel Practitioner's Guide to Legal Aid Western Australia, is mandatory for all new panel applications from both new and existing members, for all panels and lists.

It attracts 1.5 CPD points in the area of Practice Management.

Private Practitioners' Cultural Awareness Training

The Legal Aid WA course, titled Panel Practitioners' Cultural Awareness Training, is mandatory for all new panel applications from both new and existing members, for all panels and lists.

It attracts 0.5 CPD points in the area of Professional/Barristers' Skills.

Children's Court Criminal Law Training

This Legal Aid WA course, titled Appearing in Criminal Matters in the Children's Court of Western Australia, is mandatory for practitioners applying for the:

  • Crime - Children’s Court Panel, or
  • Crime - Sex Offences Panel (adult and youth).

It attracts 1 CPD point in Professional/Barristers' Skills and 0.5 CPD point in Substantive Law (including practice and procedure, and evidence for Barristers).

Dispute Resolution for Legal Representatives Training

This Legal Aid WA course is mandatory for practitioners applying for the:

  • Dispute Resolution Panel
  • Family Law Panel,
  • Protection and Care panel, or
  • Independent Children's Lawyer and Child Representative List.

It attracts 1 CPD point in Professional Skills. 

Family and Domestic Violence Training

This Legal Aid WA course is mandatory for practitioners applying for the:

  • Dispute Resolution Panel
  • Family Law Panel
  • Independent Children's Lawyer and Child Representative List
  • Protection and Care Panel, or
  • Restraining Order Panel.

It attracts 1 CPD point in Professional Skills and 0.5 CPD points in Ethics and Professional Responsibility.

Protection and Care Training 

This Legal Aid WA course, titled Representation in Protection and Care Proceedings - moving towards better outcomes is mandatory for practitioners applying for the:

  • Protection and Care Panel, or
  • Independent Children’s Lawyer and Child Representative List.

It attracts 0.5 CPD points in Professional Skills and 0.5 CPD points in Substantive Law.
