Resources and Community Legal Education
Legal Aid WA creates resources for community legal education (CLE) projects. These resources are often developed in partnership with community legal centres or other legal aid organisations.

Self-help information and resources
Legal Aid WA develops information resources, videos, kits and guides to help people dealing with legal problems. This website and our information sheets cover the most commonly encountered civil, criminal and family law topics that people might come across. There are also self-help resources that are designed to help people resolve matters on their own if they do not have legal representation.These cover a range of civil, family and criminal law topics, including:
- Mortgage stress and financial hardship
- Applying for an interim Family Violence Restraining Order
- Recovery orders for children
- Dealing with damage to cars or property after a car accident
- Criminal trials in the Magistrates Court
- Removing old convictions or driver's licence disqualifications
- Prison offences and applying for parole
R U Legal?
R U Legal? is a program of free community legal education sessions and resources for young people between 10 and 18 years old. It has been developed by Legal Aid WA to provide young people with information about the criminal justice system and the laws that affect them.
Sessions are presented from the perspective of our criminal lawyers and use real-life examples to show legal consequences to young people. We deliver R U Legal? education sessions to school students, parents, teachers and community groups across WA.
R U Legal? covers:
- the age of criminal responsibility
- common ways that young people get into trouble with the law
- consequences of breaking the law
- cyberbullying and identity theft
- school fights and filming
- intimate images, sexting and image-based abuse
- sex and consent
- Leavers and parties - issues relating to drugs, alcohol, driving, and sex and consent
- your rights when dealing with the police, and
- where to get help.
When Separating
A family law resource to help people thinking about or going through separation. It covers important topics for adults and children involved in a separation, featuring short videos, resources and referrals for support and advice.
The videos in When Separating deal with telling the children, getting help and advice, planning for the future, high conflict relationships, family violence, dispute resolution services, property settlements, and separation for regional or rural families.
Blurred Borders
A collaborative Commonwealth-funded multi-agency project being led by Legal Aid WA. Focusing on the East Kimberley WA and western Northern Territory cross-border region, Legal Aid WA has developed a range of client communication resources, using visual art, plain language and storytelling, to help explain key legal concepts around bail, criminal process and family violence.
What's the law? Australian law for new arrivals
A collection of short videos and learning materials on common legal problems that are often faced by new arrivals to Australia. The resources are designed to help teach people about Australian laws, as well as their rights. They can be used by teachers, educators and community workers who work with migrants and refugees. They are designed to be used in English classes, but can easily be used in other community education settings.
Legal Stories
Video resources to help Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people sort out some of the common legal problems they may face, as identified in the Indigenous Legal Needs Project.
