Youth Law Team

Youth Law Team

Legal Aid WA has a specialist team of lawyers working as part of the Youth Law Team in the Criminal Law division. These lawyers are experienced at working in the Children's Court and have a strong focus on juvenile justice. They specialise in providing legal assistance to young people.

How can the Youth Law Team help me?

Lawyers from the Youth Law Team can help you by:

  • representing you in court if you have been charged with a criminal offence
  • providing legal advice over the telephone
  • having an appointment with you at Legal Aid WA to talk about your situation
  • visiting you at a remand or detention centre or prison for a legal appointment.

Where is the Youth Law Team located?

Our office is at 32 St Georges Terrace, Perth (opposite Government House). You also can speak with us any week day morning at Perth Children's Court at 160 Pier Street, Perth (behind the Perth Now building) or make an appointment to speak with us at the Legal Aid WA office.

For client enquiries, contact (08) 9261 6293 or see the duty lawyer at any of the metropolitan Children's Courts.

Court appearances

A criminal lawyer from the Youth Law Team can represent you for:

  • bail applications
  • pleas of guilty
  • appearances at the Drug Court
  • defended matters (where you plead not guilty)
  • reviews of sentences before the President of the Children's Court
  • appeals to higher court.

In the Children's Court, criminal matters are heard either before a magistrate or the President of the Court. The President is a District Court judge, but also has the same powers as a Supreme Court judge to hear and decide the most serious of criminal matters in the Children's Court.

Can the youth law team help me quickly?

We provide a free duty lawyer service daily in the Perth Children's Court. We also provide a free duty lawyer service when the Children's Court is sitting in the following locations:

  • Armadale
  • Fremantle
  • Joondalup
  • Mandurah
  • Midland
  • Rockingham
  • numerous other regional locations.

For further information about our duty lawyer service see the Duty Lawyer Service webpage.

You should not appear in court unrepresented. A lawyer from the Youth Law Team will make every effort to be in court with you, however they may refer you to another lawyer.

Being summonsed to court or arrested can be a very unsettling experience. The Youth Law Team lawyers are here to assist you and advise and represent you. You do not have to be charged with an offence before you ring a lawyer from the Youth Law Team for legal advice. If you have any questions or concerns, the lawyers will be happy to discuss matters with you either over the telephone or in person.
